The Nature of Science

I am excited to see if I can teach the concept of science to 1st through 5th graders. We found a cool activity designed by Jason Choi on "The Nature of Science". The challenge is to put together four different puzzle pieces to form a square. It gets tricky when square "x" is introduced. The activity represents how nature is a puzzle and scientists use different pieces of information to develop their understandings of the world around them. Sometimes new discoveries are made and we incorporate the information into our understanding. The awesome Casie Carnes and I created floor sized pieces for kids to manipulate in teams of three or four. I still have a hard time getting all the pieces to fit without using the pictures.

The students all also learned that science takes collaboration!
